Self assessment

For a self assessment exercise across all areas of collection management in the museum try the Collection Care Self-assessment pack for museums

Self assessment guides are an easy way of comparing current collections care practice against simple indicators. The guide is a tool which will allow those holding Burns related material to gauge what measures need to be taken to ensure a long and healthy future for collections of national significance. Once you have assessed your own collection management against the grid, there are suggestions on how best to respond to gaps in the ‘opportunities for action’ section which follows.

Opportunities for action

What to do next largely depends on what particular challenges exist for your collection.

For practical conservation advice on preventing damage or taking remedial action, consult Improving Collection Care below.

For help and support in taking action:

  • go to the Funding section for advice on possible funding sources for making improvements to collections care
  • go to the People section for access to a network of professionals who specialise in managing Burns collections
  • go to the Training section for details of conservation training providers
