Burns Cottage, Alloway - the birthplace of Robert Burns - interior view of KitchenThis photograph taken in 1999 is of the kitchen in Burns Cottage in Alloway, the thatched birthplace of Scotland's national poet. Robert Burns the first born of William Burnes's seven children spent his first seven years here. William had a seven acre plot beside the Cottage which he called "The New Gardens". This room was the original "But" of the two rooms first built comprising kitchen and recessed bed alcove. The dresser and plate rack are contemporary with the cottage as are the fireplace and fittings. The wall of this room blew in shortly after the birth of Robert requiring the family to seek shelter with neighbours until repairs were done. In 1900 the Burns Monument Trustees restored the Cottage to closer to the condition it would have been in when the Burns family moved out in 1766. Further restoration was conducted by the Trust in 1993 to give a more exact representation of the 1766 conditions. Record detailsTo search on related items, click any linked text below.
