Framed engraving of 'Alloway's Auld Haunted Kirk'

The Poet Robert Burns was born in a small thatched Cottage in Alloway, Ayr on 25th. January 1759. He wrote his epic comic tale featuring the local church Kirk Alloway just half a mile from is birthplace close to the River Doon.

The scene depicts the ruined church surrounded by gravestones. At the entrance to the churchyard is the grave of Burns' father William who died in 1784. The church was built about 1516 and about 1691 it went out of regular use until the 1740's when it became a local schoolhouse for a short period.

Kirk Alloway was the setting of Burns'enduring epic comic tale of 'Tam O' Shanter which describes the drunken encounter of Tam seeing the witches dance in the ruin and being pursued by them to the nearby Brig O'Doon. The picture was sketched by R. Taylor in 1818.
