Friars’ Carse Hermitage

This small summer house called The Hermitage was owned by the Riddell Family of Friars’ Carse, an estate which neighbours Ellisland. The Hermitage was made available to Burns during his time at Ellisland Farm.

Burns used the peace and beauty of the location as inspiration for some of his writing. Works include a verse inscribed by the poet in a pane of glass, now in the collection at Ellisland
